Tasmanian Arboretum - 2009/2010

Devonport High School students have teamed up with industry experts and arboretum volunteers to help update and further develop the sites Geographic Information System (GIS).  Stage one involved the installation of 14 survey reference points.  The points added to the existing network of below-ground steel reference pegs.  Plantings at the Arboretum have generally been mapped by triangulation with 2 measuring tapes back to the below-ground steel reference pegs. The new survey points form part of a triangulated irregular network (TIN). This TIN will allow plantings and infrastructure to be measured with a 'Total Station' or RTK GPS.  An accuracy of around 10mm anywhere over the entire 58ha (around 140 acres) will then be possible for future mapping tasks.  The second stage involved converting the existing GIS data set from the 'old' AGD66 to the 'newer' GDA94 datum.  Stage three involved saw the latest infrastructure surveyed and added to the GIS.
